We have seen this happen before. When celebrity artists, musicians or actors die, suddenly their previous works become much more valuable and sought after.
Michael Jackson had 3 of the top 5 selling albums in the U.S. for the second week in a row. ”Number Ones” sold an amazing 339,000, ”Thriller” sold 189,000 copies and ”The Essential Michael Jackson” sold 125,000 copies. ”Number Ones” would have been #1 on the Billboard Top 200 charts if it was eligible to compete. It sold a little more than twice as many copies as ”NOW 31”, which holds the #1 position on the Top 200. There is a great article on Yahoo.com here that breaks down the all the numbers.
It is sad that we as a culture don’t seem to appreciate what we have, until it is gone. Maybe this will be the time we take that lesson to heart.
